The video itself I couldn't find due to the nature of the internet (and Youtube deleting it most likely), but this post more than filled in that role. Most of the articles here don't interest me, except this one. This singular post almost feels like reading my own thoughts on the screen.

I could go on and on, on why "meme culture" is the worst thing to have happened to comedy. But instead of repeating what's already written in the OP, I think I'll give an update on the state of things. A sort of retrospect on how things evolved.

As of writing this, it's the middle of 2019 and memes haven't really changed since 2013 or even 2003. People are still copy and pasting objectively unfunny images and text in situations that barely warrant them. But a few phenomena appeared that have slightly altered memes.

Some time between 2012-14 a sort of meta-humor was applied to meme culture that changed how things went about. Before that, memes were sort of innocent in that people used them like they would a normal joke. But with the rise of the meta-humor people started to mock popular memes and those who shared them as being too mainstream and not "in". Small communities began making ironic memes; memes that are jokes about already existing memes and even meme culture itself. Most notable examples of this are the word "meme" getting millions of variations like "maymay, mee mees, meems etc.", pepe the frog being first turned into a scat loving, BDSM torture freak, then into a nazi, all to chase away the "normalfags" and reclaim what was once a niche.

This stuff quickly expanded into forums, social medias and file sharing sites and gained a lot of traction with the younger generations and inevitably, eventually it got stale. To cut a very long story short, this meta-cult became the new norm of meme culture. You only need to look into twitter or any internet culture archiving site like KYM or ED to see how things have changed. No longer is an image of the Simpsons good enough. Now everything needs to be under several layers of irony, deep fried and with a hefty use the term "bruh". Newer memes now tend to die and become stale ever faster and no amount of bells and whistles seems to help increase shelf life.

The author is long gone, but I just like to say thank you for voicing a very valid concern over something that no one seems to talk about and judging by the comments I say it still holds true.

PS: I really hate the term "meme-culture".Luetenanthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07838880515128693341noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3601300592455836325.post-12011086326894507072016-05-19T10:39:23.144-05:002016-05-19T10:39:23.144-05:00Actaully this article was spot on.
